TiVo App for iPhone and iPod touch Enhances Users’ Television Experience

TiVo today launched its TiVo App for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app allows TiVo users to use the device as a remote with gesture-based controls. Other features allow users to browse the TV program guide, schedule one-time and Season Pass recording on-the-go, share comments, and search for information on shows, actors, and more, all without interrupting what is currently being played on the DVR. Another feature, termed “Guest Mode,” allows users who do not own a TiVo DVR to get a sampling of what TiVo has to offer.

Time Warner Cable Releases iPad Mobile App Version 2.0

Time Warner Cable has launched TWCable TV 2.0 for the Apple iPad, an upgraded mobile app that includes a variety of new features, including access to more than 100 live channels, an enhanced program guide, remote DVR management, and the ability to change TV channels using an iPad.

HomePlug Powerline Supports IEEE’s P1905 Hybrid Home Network Protocol

With its members intent on developing the network software that will simplify and make distributing voice, data, audio, multimedia content and applications more efficient, reliable and higher performing, the HomePlug Powerline Alliance is supporting the IEEE P1905 hybrid home network standard, the broadband powerline industry association announced.

First Open G.hn Interoperability Plugfest a Success

The first Open.Ghn Chipset Interoperability Plugfest, held in Geneva in late May, was seen as a major success. The event, which was a joint effort of the HomeGrid Forum and the Broadband Forum, allowed vendors to test the interoperability of their offerings.

OTT Platform Forecasted for Major Growth

By 2016, it is projected that the number of households using OTT video services will more than double from 2010 numbers, according to research done by The Diffusion Group. The forecast anticipates 250 million households will be leveraging OTT video services in 2016, which will represent only 51% of households that are capable of receiving these services.

Report: iPad App Usability Improves, New Problems Emerge

iPad apps are much improved, but new usability problems have emerged, such as swipe ambiguity and navigation overload,” concludes a follow-up study conducted by Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox. On the plus side, “iPad user interfaces have become decidedly less wacky,” in the year since Alertbox published the results of an initial iPad usability study.

Online Video Viewers Projected to Exceed 1 Billion by 2016

The OTT video industry figures to grow in the next years as the online video viewer consumer base is expected to exceed 1 billion viewers.  By 2016, ABI Research projects worldwide online video viewers to surpass 1.3 billion, about 40% more than the 2010 customer base of around 780 million.

According to ABI Research, revenues from OTT will reach $20 billion by 2016. Netflix figures to benefit the most as it is the current leader in OTT revenues. iTunes and Hulu are not far behind as each hold 15% of the OTT market share.

Hulu Plus Now on TiVo Premiere DVRs

Hulu’s premium OTT video service, Hulu Plus, is now available as a subscription service on TiVo Premiere video boxes, director of product management Rob Wong posted on the Hulu blog today.  A $7.99 a month fee gives subscribers access to the expanded range of Hulu Plus content, and makes viewing possible via smartphones, gaming consoles and tablets, as well as PCs and TVs.
